The Philippe Austruy Collection

A passion for art to be shared

Built since the 1980s, the Collection Philippe Austruy now comprises nearly five hundred works of contemporary art, almost half of which are displayed at the Commanderie de Peyrassol. Over the years, the collection has grown through encounters with artists and the discerning eye of its collector, whose interest spans the diversity of artistic practices from the 20th and 21st centuries.

The Collection Philippe Austruy has been shaped by a commitment to the wide range of forms and approaches found in contemporary creation. It brings together major figures of the international art scene alongside more discreet artists, creating a rich ensemble of media and practices, including sculpture, painting, photography, installations and site-specific works.

The collection creates a dialogue between several generations of artists, from leading figures of the second half of the 20th century to contemporary creators. It features works associated with some of the most significant movements in recent art history — including Nouveau Réalisme, Narrative Figuration, Conceptual Art, Minimalism and Abstraction — alongside more current practices, reflecting the collector’s ongoing interest in the evolution of contemporary art.

At the Commanderie de Peyrassol, the artworks are not confined to exhibition spaces; they are an integral part of the estate experience. Unfolding across architecture, landscape and vineyards, the collection is deeply embedded in the identity of the site and accompanies visitors throughout their discovery of the estate, where contemporary art, nature, wine and gastronomy exist in constant dialogue.

Sculpture Park

The Sculpture Park is one of the most distinctive features of the Commanderie de Peyrassol. Nearly eighty works are permanently installed throughout the estate, among the vineyards, the Remarkable Garden and the forest paths, creating an open-air journey through the heart of the property.

Sculpture holds a special place within the collection. Set within a remarkably rich natural environment, the works reveal themselves along winding paths and clearings, in direct dialogue with the landscape and the changing light. This exceptional setting offers an artistic experience that complements that of the art centre: the works are encountered in space and over time, shaped by the seasons, the evolving vegetation and the shifting qualities of light.

This outdoor parcours provides an opportunity to explore a variety of approaches to contemporary sculpture, from major figures of the second half of the twentieth century to more recent artists. As such, it represents one of the central pillars of the collection, where the artistic experience unfolds at the heart of the Provençal landscape.

THE ART CENTER

Designed in 2016 by architect Charles Berthier, the Art Center at the Commanderie de Peyrassol was conceived to house the most sensitive works in the collection, particularly those requiring specific conservation conditions. Constructed in concrete, the building echoes the terraced layout that shapes the estate’s architecture and forms part of a group of structures inherited from the site’s agricultural history.

These gallery spaces provide an ideal setting for the presentation of paintings, photographs and installations, offering visitors a different perspective on the collection that complements the outdoor sculpture trail.

The main exhibition space is dedicated to a selection of works from the collection, regularly renewed to highlight the dialogue between the various generations and artistic practices it brings together. The works are presented in conversation with one another, revealing formal, historical and thematic connections.

This space is accessible only through guided tours.

The antechamber of the collection and the collection storage

Starting in 2026, two new spaces will enrich the presentation of the Philippe Austruy Collection: the Antechamber of the Collection and the Collection Storage. Located near the wine cellar and the estate’s reception areas, they offer visitors new ways to discover the artworks.

The Antechamber of the Collection is conceived as an introductory space. Easily accessible to visitors, it hosts temporary displays that explore specific aspects of the collection, highlight recently acquired works, or create new and unexpected dialogues between artists.

The Collection Storage offers a glimpse behind the scenes of the collection. Designed as both a conservation and display space, it provides access to works that are usually kept in storage. This unique setting offers a more direct insight into the life of a collection and the diversity of the artworks it contains.
